Fitted furniture and joinery

Wells-next-the-Sea

Wells houses stand between a working harbour and the marshes, and most of them were not built for modern storage.

Flint cottages, tall narrow houses on the narrow streets, and homes set back towards Holkham all share awkward plans. A fitted wardrobe, a window seat with storage, or a freestanding sideboard is often more use than a run of loose furniture that does not fit the wall.

No Wells-next-the-Sea commission is named in the portfolio. The photographs here show furniture and joinery the workshop has made. They are examples of the work, not claims that these pieces stand in Wells.

Joinery for these houses is usually about windows, doors and linings that match what is already there. Salt air is a reason to make the timber and the finish for the place, rather than to drop in a showroom carcass.

Pieces are made at the family workshop and fitted in the house. The sequence is on the process page. Timber on the bench is the European oak, walnut and painted hardwood already described on the services page.

Photographs from the workshop

Captions say when a photograph belongs to a named commission. Otherwise it is an example of the work, not a claim about a house in Wells-next-the-Sea.
